The 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade sails Wednesday, December 16 through Sunday, December 20. Each night the boats leave the Tip of Lido Isle at about 6:30 p.m. and get back there at about 9:00 p.m. The organizer puts the fleet at more than 100 decorated yachts and boats on a 14-mile route. The Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting again.
A parade that long doesn't pass everyone at once. Marina Park sees the lead boats before 7 p.m. Lido Marina Village waits until almost 8:46. Where you stand decides when your evening starts and ends, and whether the drone shows land before, during or after the boats. The official 2026 route map gives a time for 57 points along the route, and planning around those times works better than planning around a place.
Here are the main checkpoints, in sailing order, from the organizer's 2026 map:
The west end of the Peninsula is the early show. Someone watching from 15th Street Beach can be home before the boats even reach Harbor Island. The east side of the harbor and the stretch along Coast Highway get the last hour, so those spots suit a later dinner.
Drone shows fly from two places every night, each twice. One site is over the Balboa Bay Resort and the other is Peninsula Park near the Fun Zone, so there's one at each end of the harbor. Their times are fixed, while the boats' arrival depends on where you're standing. Some spots get both close together. Others get a long gap.
| Spot | Drone show times | Boats pass | How the evening runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fun Zone / Balboa Pavilion | Peninsula Park, 6:45 and 8:00 | 7:15 | Drones, boats 30 minutes later, then drones again |
| Balboa Bay Resort | Balboa Bay Club, 6:15 and 8:15; 6:00 and 8:15 on Dec. 16 | 8:35 | The late show ends 20 minutes before the boats arrive |
| Newport Sea Base | Balboa Bay Club, 8:15 | 8:39 | Same late pairing, a few minutes further along |
| Marina Park | Fireworks off Newport Pier at 6:15, opening night only | 6:54 | Fireworks, then boats within the hour |
The Fun Zone has the most going on. Between 6:45 and 8:00 you get two drone shows with the parade passing in the middle, all next to the Balboa Pavilion. The Balboa Bay Resort end is better for people who would rather show up late. Get there for the 8:15 drones and the boats follow soon after.
The loop sends the boats past both ferry landings, about 46 minutes apart. They pass the Peninsula landing at 7:15 and the Balboa Island landing at 8:01. In between, they go out past Peninsula Point, Pirate's Cove and China Cove, then come back past the U.S. Coast Guard station and the yacht clubs.
The Balboa Island Ferry keeps running during the parade. According to the ferry's own FAQ, Parade Control makes breaks so crews can load and unload at the docks. The ferry runs daily until midnight and takes cash only, and you don't need tickets in advance. That makes a two-sighting evening possible. Watch from the Fun Zone at 7:15, ride across, and walk to the South Bayfront or the Grand Canal before the boats get there at 7:54. If the crossing takes longer, the island's North Bayfront gets them at 8:07.
Lido Isle works the same way. The boats pass the Lido Isle Yacht Club at 6:35 and the Lido Isle Bridge at 6:45. Nearly two hours later they come back past Lido Park and the Lido Bridge at 8:50 and Via Lido North Genoa Beach at 8:53, then finish at 9:00. Anyone hosting on Lido can see the start before dinner and the finish after it.
The organizer's Dine & Watch list names waterfront restaurants along the route. Matched against the map, they split into an early group and a late group.
Early in the route, boats before 7:15:
Late in the route, boats after 8:30:
Choosing between the groups comes down to timing. At the early restaurants, the boats go by around the start of a typical dinner. At Mariner's Mile and Lido Marina Village, the boats arrive about two hours into the parade, so you can sit down for a normal dinner and see them before dessert. GuacAmigos is on the Dine & Watch list too. On the same stretch of Coast Highway, the map times Tavern House Kitchen + Bar and SOL Mexican Cocina at 8:26.
Two ticketed options also follow the clock. Newport Sea Base sells seats for all five nights, with lawn seats at $12 to $14 and balcony seats at $15 to $18. The map puts the boats there at 8:39. On the water, Davey's Locker and Newport Landing run parade cruises December 16 through 20 with three departure windows. Adult fares are $47 or $62 and junior fares $43 or $57, depending on the night. The organizer's on-the-water page lists more operators, including City Cruises, Gondola Adventures and EB Rentals.
Opening night adds things the other four nights don't have. Fireworks go off over Newport Pier at about 6:15 p.m. on December 16, fifteen minutes before the boats leave Lido. Marina Park, at 1600 W. Balboa Blvd., hosts a free kickoff from 4 p.m. It includes the fourth annual Holiday Market, run with Vogels Vibes, with more than 35 local makers and food vendors, live music and activities for kids until 8 p.m.
The organizer calls the 10.5-acre park the largest public viewing area on the route, and it has 177 parking spaces. Those spaces may not help on Wednesday. Visit Newport Beach's parade guide says the Marina Park lot is closed to the public on opening night, so plan on street parking or a nearby lot. Because the boats pass Marina Park before 7 p.m., an opening-night visit fits the market, the fireworks and the parade into about three hours.
The organizer says City lots and street parking along the route are available, but lots fill quickly. For the Fun Zone, the City's Balboa Pier lot at Palm Street and Balboa Boulevard has 614 spaces and is open around the clock. The City also notes that its East Ocean Front lot near Balboa Pier is partially closed until September 2027. In its 2025 parade guide, the Newport Beach Independent advised against parking on Balboa Island and suggested parking on Bayside Drive and walking over.
If you're watching from your own boat, separate rules apply. The City's Harbor Department lists a no-wake zone and a 5-mph speed limit in the harbor. The federal rule for the parade's regulated area, 33 CFR 100.1104, says spectator vessels may not anchor, block, loiter or impede parade participants or official patrol boats, and must stop immediately when an official patrol vessel signals them. These rules are summarized here as general information, not legal advice. Boaters should check the current requirements with the Harbor Department or the Sheriff's Harbor Patrol.
Waterfront homes, businesses and yacht clubs that would rather be part of the show can enter the Ring of Lights decorating competition. Entry is $35 and due before noon on Friday, December 11, and judging is Monday, December 14. That puts the judging two days before the first boat leaves Lido, so displays need to be finished well before parade week. The 2025 Best Yacht Club award went to Balboa Yacht Club. On the water, the top 2025 boat prize, the Bill Lusk Award, went to Serenity Now!
Many bayfront homes on Lido, Balboa Island and Harbor Island are on the parade route, and each one sees the boats at its own time of night. If you're thinking about owning a home with a dock, and want to know which stretches of the harbor see the boats when, Susie McKibben can walk you through the waterfront before or after parade week.
